The nine cannabis products with different THC and CBD contents are expected to be available for sale from August 2023 at 21 delivery points.
The Federal Office of Health in Switzerland has approved the study “Züri Can – Cannabis with Responsibility” in Zurich. The project, which is run by the University Psychiatric Clinic Zurich and the City of Zurich, will investigate the effects of cannabis on consumers and the effects of regulation on the market. The agency's approval will allow producers to begin cultivating experimental weed and consumers can now sign up to participate in the study, according to a joint press release sent out last week by the City of Zurich, the University of Zurich and the Psychiatric Institute.
Approval from the Federal Office of Public Health
In June 2022, the University Psychiatric Clinic Zurich, in collaboration with the City of Zurich, submitted an application for a study permit to the Federal Office of Public Health and the Cantonal Ethics Committee. The ethics committee approved the observational study since August 2022. The agency's pending approval has now also been granted.
Andreas Hauri, city council member, stated in the press release: “We are pleased to finally be able to start our science-based cannabis research and thus contribute to a modern drug policy.” Earlier, Zurich was supposed to be the first city in Switzerland where an experiment would take place, but that was postponed to the first half of 2023.
Production of Swiss legalized cannabis
With the BAG approval granted, the two producers Pure Production AG and Swissextract can start growing the cannabis plants needed for the research. The first harvest is expected in July 2023. The study cannabis comes from domestic organic production and nine cannabis products are offered during the pilot, differing in THC and CBD content. The products are expected to be on sale from August 2023 at 21 delivery points. Unlike cannabis flowers, hashish products are expected to become available in the second half of October 2023 due to longer production time and more complex processing.
Grower Pure Proudction AG, commented on LinkedIn:
We have received the green light from the Federal Office of Public Health FOPH to produce experimental weed for the pilot project “Züri Can – Cannabis with Responsibility”. This is the second pilot trial of cannabis in Switzerland, which is expected to start in the third quarter of 2023. The license allows the production of nine different cannabis products with varying cannabinoid content from domestic bio-production. Pure Production AG, already producing Europe's first recreational THC, will now produce cannabis plants for the trial. Interested persons who live in the city of Zurich, are of legal age and regularly consume cannabis can now register to participate in the study. We at Pure Holding AG are proud to be a major force in the regulation of the cannabis industry, paving the way for the worldwide social acceptance and versatile use of the cannabis plant.
